Tuesday, September 16, 14: Left is Nortia's first cover attempt.
To my surprise, my left shoulder still hurts. Saturday last I had to hold my left with my right arm as I went to the store. Yesterday I thought that this had stopped and that the incision site pain had stopped. But if I am upright more that a few moments the pain returns and I must retire to lie on my back. Pain is less intense but still feels like the Drs. cut all the way to the bone. Today is the last hotel free cancel day for Yale Af Am Center’s 45th anniversary. I cancelled. I love to attend these events because the Center was like my home in New Haven. I made photos in the basement, acted in plays, danced at parties and attended both the Black Church and lectures there from 1968 on. But the thought of a back pack on my shoulder led me to cancel this time. At the 40th anniversary, students actually performed a play made largely from the Yale entries of my historical BLACK HARVARD/BLACK YALE book. Unfortunately, they gave me no credit in the program. I was thinking to cancel the St. Martin trip too but realized my editor had given me a small, 4-wheeled suitcase without back straps. I’ll take that to St. Martin week of October 20. If you wanna go along please make arrangements. I hope to attend Rotary Club meetings on both the French and Dutch sides of the island that week.
Monday, September 8, 14: Continued incision pain makes me think St. Martin will not be a good idea by late October. The weight of my new ICD pulls on the incision such that a two hour flight would be unbearable even two months post surgery. I expected to have resumed book writing by now but sitting up for 15 minutes still causes pain and I have lie on my back for an hour’s recovery. Nortia press has begun editing and typesetting BLUE SKY and I liked their version of a possible book cover design they sent this past weekend.
Tuesday, September 2, 14: Today is the first since surgery 12 days ago that I have been able to sit up without pain. I’ve not even been able to type more than 2 sentences at a time. I’m very glad what I feared most was not needed, i.e., opening my ribs to repair a vein or heart muscle rip. I may have delayed my recovery by attempting lower body exercise last Sunday. I was surprised that doing my legs really hurt the upper chest incision. OK, it is starting to hurt now. I have a Dr. appointment Oct. 30 and so will attempt St. Martin the weekend before.
Wednesday, August 20, 14: To 8/21/14 Kaiser surgery staff for me, Jesse RHINES, PhD. Surgery is to replace my ICD and the leads from it to my heart. Please know that since my robotic prostatectomy, I also have an artificial penile sphincter that must be opened before folly catheterization. I also have had both hips replaced.
